“We can’t choose the community or religion that we are born into, so we should never think that our community is our identityâ€
-Sudha Murty, The Day I Stopped Drinking Milk
This single sentence is capable of questioning all your lifelong societal beliefs. Isn’t it?
This is the power of Sudha Murty’s writing. She writes everything so conventionally that it sounds relatable to readers. “The Day I Stopped Drinking Milk†is a non-fiction book by Sudha Ji and again it contains all her real-life experiences and incidents. Her books are full of real-life learnings and the best part about her books is that you will get to see the true colors of India, from the big malls to MNCs to the smallest of villages and their beliefs.
I read this book as a part of #Sudhamurtyreadathon and this was my second read for the readathon. I absolutely loved it. It was kind of refreshing and helped me a lot in gaining back my reading speed and interest. It is a collection of short stories and every story is independent of each other. This is the mesmerizing beauty of Short Stories. You feel like you are learning from each and every story yet it does not feel like a burden or something.
Few of my favorite quotes from this book are-
I realized that only disease and not honesty and integrity are passed down to the next generation through genes
Don’t judge a person by their looks or from rumours. Looks can be deceptive. It is not that all rich people are bad and all poor people are innocent.
Compassion cannot be taught, sold or brought, It is one of the characteristics that you have to develop from the beginning.
There is a charm in Sudha Murty’s stories that will delight readers of all ages. That simplicity and originality in her writing make the book more special. Her ordinary stories can leave extraordinary impacts on the reader’s lives.
While reading her books, I feel like I am listening to my grandma’s stories with learnings to live your life to the fullest and to make you a person of morals and values. Sudha Murty is definitely one of my favorite authors from all the time
